Stop Reciting "The Lord's Prayer"

Hmm. Stop reciting the Lord's Prayer? You're probably wondering - well I'm sure you are wondering - what in the world I am talking about!

And so I'm going to tell you, because we have been doing it all wrong. All wrong!

The church world has taught that we are to take the following passage and recite it, and then that's it. I can remember standing in church many years ago and reciting The Lord's Prayer in unison with everyone in the congregation. No, no!! What God is teaching us here In Matthew 6:9-13 is not something we are to blindly recite, but rather we are to use these passages as a GUIDE for HOW to pray.

Let me walk you through this. Your prayer will be exclusive to you and your needs. The following is just an example.

Our Father, who art in heaven;

Father in the name of Jesus, I worship you. You are my Father in heaven Who meets all of my needs because I am Your child. Blessed is Your name. Your name is above all, and when I call upon Your name, I know that You hear me. And I know that I have the answers to my prayers.

Thy kingdom come;

Lord, I know that there is a heaven, but Your kingdom is planted firmly on this earth and I live as a part of Your kingdom. Spiritually I am seated with you in heavenly realms, but physically I am here on earth. Everything that you have to give us is right here on earth. I have full access to Your kingdom, right here and now. It's not only about when I get to heaven. It's about accessing the blessings of Your Kingdom now, while I have a mission here in this earthly realm. You have given me an assignment and I need Your kingdom and everything it offers, right here with me.

Thy will be done;

Lord, anytime I have a need, I read Your Word and find out what You have to say. Your Word is Your Will and so right now I have a need of healing in my body, so Your will says that You heal all of my diseases. I know that it is Your will for me to receive Your healing power and today I receive because I know that this is Your will. I can pray with confidence knowing that healing is Your will. It's done.

On earth as it is in heaven;

Father, there is no sickness in heaven, and on this earth, there should be no sickness within me because You have given me all the tools to be an overcomer in Christ. In the garden there was no sickness and so Your will for this earth is to have no sickness here. As it is in heaven so it shall be here.

Give us this day our daily bread;

Lord, I am asking for everything that You have provided for me as a child of God. Food, shelter and a wonderful income so that I can provide for my family. I will pray this every day and give You thanks and the glory.

And forgive us our trespasses;

Lord, if there is anything I have done that is sinful and that displeases you, I repent and ask You to forgive me. (List anything you can think of in your confession. )

As we forgive those who trespass against us;

Father God, there are some people who have hurt me tremendously. I am going to choose to forgive them and turn them over to You. I cannot hold on to this sin of unforgiveness any longer. It's a burden. Forgive me and bless them, so that they would come to know You and repent for their own sins.

And lead us not into temptation;

Lord, this world holds a lot of things that are not of God. Satan is the god of this world and we are just passing through here on our journey home. Keep me strong to say no to the things of this world. Keep my eyes focused on You. Give me the fruit of self-control.

But deliver us from the evil one;

Lord, I know that you tell us in Ephesians to put on the whole armour of God and to RESIST the enemy. I know that it is up to me to stand firm and to do spiritual warfare against the enemy of our soul who comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy. You have given me the tools: I have Your Name. I have the Word. I have the Blood. I will not allow them to lie dormant, but with the words of my mouth I will combat the enemy, at every turn and I will not back down. You are my deliverer. So.... use the Lord's Prayer as a template... a guide... so that you can pray out what needs to be prayed, in your own situation. Make sense?? Matthew 6:9-13 - "This, then, is how you should pray: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
