The Faith of Friends: Choosing a Circle That Lifts You Up

In Mark 2:1-12, we read about a group of devoted friends who did something extraordinary for their paralyzed companion. When they heard that Jesus was in town, they knew He was the only one who could heal their friend. But when they arrived at the house where Jesus was teaching, it was so crowded they couldn’t get through the door. Instead of giving up, they climbed onto the roof, tore a hole in it, and lowered their friend down—right in front of Jesus. Their faith and determination led to a miracle, as Jesus not only healed the man physically but also forgave his sins.

This story is a powerful reminder of the kind of friends we need in our lives. Friends who don’t just stand by but take action. Friends who will go the extra mile to bring us closer to Jesus, especially in times of struggle.

In life, friends will come and go. Some friendships are seasonal, teaching us lessons or walking with us through certain chapters. But not everyone is meant to stay. That’s why it’s so important to keep our circle small and surround ourselves with those who are truly devoted—friends who love us, encourage us, and most importantly, know how to pray.

The world is full of superficial connections, but true, faith-filled friendships are rare and precious. We need friends who, when we’re too weak to carry ourselves, will carry us in prayer. Friends who remind us of God’s promises and help us stay strong in our faith. Just like the men in Mark 2, these kinds of friends will do whatever it takes to bring us closer to Jesus.

Take a moment today to evaluate your circle. Are your friends lifting you up in faith, or pulling you away from God’s presence? Surround yourself with those who point you to Jesus, and be that kind of friend to others.
